Sunroom Mini-Split Installation

Sunroom Mini-Split Installation

Project Overview

Sunrooms are among the most common candidates for ductless mini-split installations in Massachusetts. They are typically built as additions without connections to the home's central HVAC system, and their construction — large glass surfaces, minimal insulation in the ceiling — creates extreme temperature swings that make them uncomfortable without dedicated climate control.

The Daikin 19 Series was the right fit for this Waltham sunroom because of its exceptional performance in high solar gain environments. The system's inverter technology continuously adjusts output to match the room's changing conditions throughout the day — ramping up cooling as afternoon sun intensifies and scaling back as the sun sets. This is far more efficient than a standard system that cycles fully on and off.

The transformation was immediate. The sunroom is now the family's favorite room year-round. They use it as a reading nook, a morning coffee spot, and a gathering space for entertaining. What was essentially dead space for half the year is now the most used room in the house.

The Challenge

The homeowner's three-season sunroom was the most visually appealing room in the house — floor-to-ceiling windows, vaulted ceiling, and beautiful garden views — but it could only be used comfortably for about half the year. From November through March, the room was too cold for anything beyond passing through, despite the homeowner placing a portable electric radiator inside. In summer, the sunroom became a greenhouse: direct sun exposure raised temperatures to over 100°F by early afternoon, and there was no ventilation beyond opening windows. The room represented significant square footage that the homeowner was essentially losing for six months each year.

Our Solution

We installed a Daikin 19 Series single-zone mini-split with an 18,000 BTU wall-mounted indoor unit. The Daikin 19 Series is specifically designed for high-demand applications with large windows and solar heat gain — exactly the conditions found in a sunroom. The indoor unit was mounted high on the only solid wall section, angled to distribute air across the room's full length. The outdoor unit was placed on a ground pad behind the existing landscaping for minimal visual impact. We ran the refrigerant line set through the wall cavity and used a decorative line cover on the exterior. The system includes Daikin's intelligent eye sensor, which detects whether the room is occupied and automatically adjusts operation to save energy when nobody is present.

Results & Outcomes

  • Sunroom usable 12 months per year instead of 6
  • Maintains 72°F even with direct afternoon sun exposure
  • Intelligent eye sensor reduces energy use by 25% when room is unoccupied
  • Became the family's most-used room in the home
